Quantifier Float, Focus, and Scope in Thai

چکیده
1. Introduction There are two divergent views on the proper analysis of Q(uantifier)-float. On one hand, the adverbial position of floated quantifiers (FQs) indicates that they are ver-Q-float in Thai is no exception. Adverbs occur at the right edge of the VP, and this is where we find FQs in Thai as well, as (1b) shows.

Continuation semantics for multi-quantifier sentences: operation-based approaches
Classical scope-assignment strategies for multi-quantifier sentences involve quantifier phrase (QP)-movement (e.g., [13], [14]). More recent continuation-based approaches provide a compelling alternative, for they interpret QP’s in situ without resorting to Logical Forms or any structures beyond the overt syntax. The continuation-based strategies can be divided into two groups: those that locat...
متن کاملOvert Scope in Hungarian
The focus of this paper is the syntax of inverse scope in Hungarian, a language that largely disambiguates quantifier scope at spell-out. Inverse scope is attributed to alternate orderings of potentially large chunks of structure, but with appeal to base-generation, as opposed to nonfeature-driven movement as in Kayne 1998. The proposal is developed within mirror theory and conforms to the assu...
متن کاملProsody and Scope in German Inverse Linking Constructions
In German, prosody interacts with quantifier scope. We investigate this interaction in inverse linking constructions. We present evidence from elicited production of linguistically naive speakers supporting the following two claims: 1) There are two kinds of inverse linking constructions of which only the prepositional type requires a marked intonation contour for inverse scope. 2) In the prepo...
متن کاملQuantifier Scope in German: An MCTAG Analysis
Relative quantifier scope in German depends, in contrast to English, very much on word order. The scope possibilities of a quantifier are determined by its surface position, its base position and the type of the quantifier. In this paper we propose a multicomponent analysis for German quantifiers computing the scope of the quantifier, in particular its minimal nuclear scope, depending on the sy...
متن کاملA Focus-based Approach to Scope Ambiguity in Japanese
This paper puts forward an analysis of scope interactions between Japanese adverbial quantifiers like mainichi 'everyday' and tokidoki 'sometimes' and a negative morpheme nai 'not' on the basis of Aocus)-structures. In this analysis, three f-structures are assigned to a sentence with an adverbial quantifier and a negative morpheme. One of them represents a negation-wide reading, and the other t...
